The United Nations estimates that more than 300,000 children are currently fighting in wars around the world, mostly with rebel groups.

The UN General Assembly approved a new international treaty in August 2000 which bans the recruitment of child soldiers by armies and rebels.

As at February 2002 96 countries have signed the treaty and 14 have ratified it.
